What is a migraine?

A migraine is a type of headache that causes moderate to severe pulsing pain or throbbing on one side of your head. In addition to the head pain, you may also experience nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light.

Researchers are still investigating what causes migraines, but your genetics and environment may play a role.

What are symptoms of a migraine?

Migraine symptoms tend to develop in phases, although you may not experience each of the phases.

Migraine phases include:

Your body may provide warning signals that a migraine attack is on its way if you go through the prodrome phase. During this phase, you may experience changes in mood, have specific food cravings, or feel stiffness in your neck. You may develop these symptoms 1-2 days prior to your head pain.

An aura is a symptom of the nervous system that may occur before or during your migraine. Symptoms may include visual disturbances, feeling pins and needles in your arm, or difficulty speaking.

A migraine headache typically causes intense, throbbing pain on one side of your head that may last from four to 72 hours. How often you get a migraine varies, from every once in a while to several times a month.

During the postdrome phase, you may feel drained and weak. This phase lasts as long as 24 hours.

Most people don’t seek treatment for migraines. But if your migraine symptoms are keeping you from doing the things you enjoy, the team at Jacinto Medical Group can help.

How are migraines treated?

The team at Jacinto Medical Group takes an individualized approach to care for your migraines with a goal of reducing your symptoms and minimizing your attacks.

To manage symptoms, your specialist may recommend:

  • Pain medication
  • Migraine-specific medication, such as ergots or triptans
  • Anti-nausea medication

If you have frequent migraine headaches, your specialist may focus on treatments that help prevent an attack, such as:

  • Cardiovascular medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Anti-seizure medication

The neurology specialists at Jacinto Medical Group may also offer Botox® injections to provide relief from your migraines. Botox works by blocking the neurotransmitters that send the pain signals to your brain.
